PROJECTS
Recent Work
Providing our clients an all encompassing service to construct quality projects on time and to budget. Innovation is key to our success along with maintaining excellent client and supplier relationships.
KETTON QUARRY
Construction of a new 1.5km long, 6m wide carriageway encompassing bulk earthwork excavations, drainage, new road and verge construction, in addition to the installation of reinforced earth bank seats with structural fills to maintain stability.
M42 CONCRETE BAY REPLACEMENTS
Following trials of our innovative approach to concrete bay replacement on the M42 motorway which was subsequently adopted by industry, we pioneered a bay replacement process which enabled the lane to be reopened to traffic within 4 hours.
Our method eliminated the requirement for an excavator mounted hydraulic breaker for the removal of the existing concrete. This alternative process enabled the bay to be removed, prepared, drilled, dowelled and the new bay poured within 45 minutes.
This increase in efficiency enabled multiple bays to be reconstructed in any one shift
M4 EASTBOUND VRS REPLACEMENT
Core were subcontracted to provide 2 sections of concrete beam foundation for a vehicle restraint system to the rear of the hard shoulder on the Eastbound M4 motorway.

Incorporating a 1.5m deep narrow filter drain capped with a recycled drainage channel adjacent to the foundation, the beam was cast on top of 6m deep CFA piles. Core cropped the piles before lifting prefabricated steel cages into place secured within the permanent formwork to reduce construction cost and material wastage.

Due to the narrow running lane inside the varioguard, this contract posed a particular logistical challenge as vehicles were unable to pass one another inside the traffic management and the motorway junctions were 13 miles apart. As such, stringent planning of daily activities to avoid unnecessary journeys was of paramount importance.
A3 SOUTHBOUND OFFSLIP, GUILDFORD
The Southbound offslip at Guildford was renowned for traffic congestion and queues causing traffic to back up to the M25 junction. As a result Core were employed to construct an additional running lane to ease the congestion.
Originally planned to be carried out during the day, it became apparent that once traffic management was deployed, it caused unacceptable and excessive delays to the travelling public resulting in a vast majority of the works being carried out under night time closures.

Enabling works consisted of extensive earthworks to form a widening for installation of a piling platform. Consequently a 7.5m deep sheet piled wall was installed with a reinforced concrete capping beam cast in 9m bays on a ‘hit and miss’ basis for the length of the slip road. The linear nature of the project required clear planning to ensure all trades could operate efficiently and effectively within the traffic management.

Scope of works also included drainage, ducting, footways and hard landscaping.
A38/A50 EMBANKMENT RECONSTRUCTION
The contract consisted of the reconstruction of the failed embankment on the northbound off slip of the A38/A50 junction. The existing embankment fills had severely slipped putting in jeopardy the integrity of the highway above. Core were engaged to excavate and dispose of the existing failed material and replace with a structural granular fill, benched into the existing embankment. Core utilised excavators mounted with GPS survey equipment to ensure accuracy and efficiency and to eliminate the need for manual setting out.
The contract also included the construction of a large laydown area and 400m of haul road to enable access to the works. Some of the challenges overcome on the scheme included Great Crested Newts, unchartered services and buried culverts.
15000t of failed material was excavated and replaced with granular structural fills laid in 150mm layers benched into the existing embankment, ensuring that any exposed bench was covered within a 24 hour period in accordance with the specification.
GEDLING ACCESS ROAD - COUNTERFORT DRAINAGE
Called upon at short notice to install 3000m of counterfort drainage on a 1 in 3 batter in the wettest of weather and the muddiest of embankments, thinking outside of the box to ensure our excavators could safely track up and down without slipping, resulted in the purchase of track grips. Installed by ourselves on site, the excavators made easy work of the adverse conditions
